Anna Hedbys, Finance Placement
Why did I choose SilverDoor?
As a placement student, I sought a programme that would strengthen my education in economics. SilverDoor offered me experience in accounts receivable, payable and credit control, which was ideal, as I wasn’t sure which career path I wanted to take.
Being a young company, I felt motivated that someone I reported to had been in exactly the same position as me two years previously, and, as such, could offer invaluable advice and encouragement.
What do I do at SilverDoor?
After my final year at university, I re-joined SilverDoor as part of the company’s graduate scheme as an Accounts Receivable Analyst. Within my first year, I was made Senior Accounts Receivable Analyst, and, since then, I’ve received a further promotion to Accounting Technician.
As an Accounting Technician, I assist with the preparation of management accounts, foreign exchange analysis, and annual audit preparation. I’m also responsible for payroll across our three offices.
What did I enjoy the most about my placement?
The atmosphere is fantastic – I didn’t feel like a student at any point. I was trusted with my work and always offered full support.
There’s only so much you can learn at university. The SilverDoor placement scheme gave me real world examples of the things I’d only practiced in a classroom.
Switching between three finance teams gave me a much greater understanding of finance processes, to such an extent that I returned to university with renewed confidence and knowledge.
Key skills and attributes required to do my job well?
Attention to detail is key for carrying out analysis of our accounts. It’s also vital to have some prior knowledge of accounting and to keep up-to-date with current affairs. Other important qualities include problem solving and numeracy skills.
