All you need to know about Worcester

Worcester is a historic city in Worcestershire, located roughly 30 miles from Birmingham, and 27 miles from London. It overlooks the River Severn, and has a population of more than 100,000. The city has a temperate climate and falls under the governance of Worcester City Council. Its suburbs include Blackpole, Northwick and Redhill.

Worchester is famous for many things including music, crockery, food and academia. It’s the original home of Royal Worcester Porcelain, and the birthplace of English composer, Edward Elgar, along with Worcestershire sauce. The world’s oldest newspaper is also said to originate from Worcester.

Worchester has long-standing history dating back to prehistoric times. In the 19th century, the city was a hub for glove making and, in the years that followed, turned its attention to engineering and mining machinery. The city is currently home to the University of Worcester which draws students from all over the world with its world-class education and research.

Worcester is brimming with attractions and landmarks. Sites worth seeing include Worcester Castle, the Tudor House Museum and Greyfriars’ House and Garden. If parks are your thing, check out Worcester Woods Country Park and, if you fancy taking in a sports game, head to the Sixways Stadium. For shopping, head to Crownsgate Worcester. At various points in the year, the city plays host to a number of shows and festivals including the Three Choirs Festival and Worchester Music Festival.

Worcester can be reached by train, bus or car. The M5 motorway passes through the city, and connects to London via the M40. You can also drive to Worcester from the Cotswolds on the A44 road.

The city offers a number of bus services, with the main pick-up point being Crowngate Bus station. It has a total of two train stations - Worchester Shrub Hill and Worcester Foregate Street - which are located in or close to the city centre. The closest airport to Worcester is Birmingham Airport, at 45 minutes away by car. Worcester can also be reached via Gloucestershire Airport, which lies 25 miles away.
