All you need to know about Izmir

Izmir is a city in Turkey’s Anatolia region. As one of the most densely populated cities on the Aegaen Sea, it has a population of more than 3 million, and a history stretching back roughly 4,000 years. It lies in a deep indentation along the Anatolian Coast, and boasts several metropolitan districts including Konak, Balcova, Bornova and Buca.

Much of Izmir’s trade is centered on it main port, which serves as a key gateway for exports. Its economy is made up of various different types of activity including transportation, communication and agriculture. After Bursa and Istanbul, Izmir is one of Turkey’s largest exporters.

The city is home to a number of good high schools and universities which make it a viable place to relocate to as a family.

Izmir’s popular modes of transport are buses and trains. Otogar, it’s main bus terminal can be found on the outskirts of the city, and, from it you can reach a number of different destinations in Turkey. The city has two main railway stations, Alsancak and Basmane, both of which provide regular connections to Tire, Selcuk, Aydin, Soke, Nazilli and Usak.  Adman Menderes International is Izmir’s main airport, and connects to Turkish cities as well as international destinations.

Its points of interest range from ancient ruins to museums and historic neighbourhoods. Top attractions include the Konak Square and the Saat Kulesi Clock Tower.
