Transport

The main transport system is made up of a local bus service and train services throughout Leicester, with a number of routes covering the whole city.

Weather

The maritime climate in Leicester makes the summertime particularly warm whilst the winters are typically cool to cold. Although there are rarely any extreme weather reports in Leicester, the rain falls fairly evenly throughout the year with the rainiest month being December.

With colder conditions throughout the winter, it is advised to bring hooded waterproof clothing and warmer attire to avoid the spells of wind and rain. 

History

Leicester stands as one of the oldest cities in the UK, with historical buildings trailing back to the 14th century. The collection of surviving architecture includes ‘Guildhall’ and ‘Jewry Wall’, some of the largest pieces of Roman architecture in Britain. 

Leicester is famously linked to King Richard III, who congregated an army in the city in 1485. Following his death and defeat in the Battle of Bosworth Field, his grave was situated in Leicester church and later discovered in 2013 by archaeologists who positioned the remains in Leicester Cathedral. 

A historical talking point of Leicester’s history is a statue that can be seen from the train into the city. The statue is of travel pioneer Thomas Cook, who in 1841 chartered a train to Loughborough, fashioning the modern tourist industry and making it a certified route on the Great Central Railway. 

Sports 

Leicester is well-known for its legendary sports clubs including the celebrated Leicester City Football Club, one of only six clubs to have won the Premier League since its inception in 1992. The club have been FA Cup finalists four times, won the League Cup three times and competed in four European campaigns. Their most recent outing in European football was the 2016–17 season, as the club reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. 

The reign of their rugby team Leicester Tigers is an English professional rugby union club based in Leicester, England. They play in Premiership Rugby, England's top division of rugby.

Leicester is also home to King Power Stadium, which opened in 2002 and has a capacity reach of 32,313, making it the 20th biggest football ground in England.
