All you need to know about Zagreb

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and a principal accommodation hub. It’s situated to the northwest of the country, overlooking the Sava River, and faces the Medvednica Mountain. It’s located 122m above sea level and has a population of more than 800,000. It is twinned with over 25 towns and shares a sister status with the following cities: Krakow and Tirana. The main language spoken in Zagreb is Croatian and the currency used is the Croatian Kuna. Its diverse economy makes it an attractive city for business travel. Serviced apartments in the city offer close proximity to many attractions, shops, and transport links.

The history of Zagreb dates back to Roman times. The first recorded reference to the city came in 1134 with a mention to the settlement, Kaptol – located in uptown Zagreb. In 1242, Zagreb was made a Free Royal City – a status originally designated to cities in the Kingdom of Hungary (of which Croatia was originally part of). During the 19th century, Zagreb was a hub for the Croatian National Revival, which saw the creation of important historic and cultural institutions. In 1862, it received its very first railway line, which connected to the city to the settlements Sisak and Zidai Most, thereby increasing business travel to the area. A year later, a major gas works opened in the Zagreb.

Since the 20th century, Zagreb has undergone considerable expansion. New neighbourhoods and residential districts housing quality serviced apartments have emerged, and, with that, the city’s population has continued to climb. Today, Zagreb is a vibrant and cultural city where Neo-Baroque and Art Deco buildings meet cobblestone streets and churches.

Popular attractions in Zagreb include Medvednica Mountain, Maksimir Park and Mirogoj Cemetery. For art, check out the Museum of Broken Relationships, and, for history, visit the Zagreb History Museum. Other sites worth seeing are King Tomislav Square and the Art Pavillion. Many of the city’s attractions are located close to serviced apartments SilverDoor provide.

Zagreb is served by trams, buses, tourist buses and trains. Trams are one of the best ways to get around Zagreb and can be boarded all over the city. The city’s extensive bus network runs day and night, and its tourist buses operate on a hop on/hop off basis. There’s a tourist train which runs through Zagreb, covering a small route between Ban Jelacic Square and the city centre.  The closest airport to Zagreb is Zagreb Franjo Tudjman Airport, at roughly eight miles away. Our Zagreb serviced apartments are located in touching distance of transport links.
