Como is a pretty city in Italy’s Lombardy region, close to
Lake Como and the Alps. It’s a popular tourist destination, cherished for its
churches, museums, gardens, palaces, parks and theatres. Findings in 2014 put
its population at 847,000.
Como is 25 miles from Milan and shares a border with
Switzerland. It’s also near to the cities Lugano, Lecco and Varese.
Originally a hub for silk manufacturing, Como’s economy,
much like the rest of Milan’s Metropolitan Area (of which its part of), is now centred
on the service industry.
Popular landmarks include the Cathedral of Como, Tempio
Voltiano and the luxury estate, Villa de Balbianello. Como’s main square,
Piazza Cavour, is a great starting point, and home to important structures like
the Teatro Adriano and Chiesa Valdese. Other sites worth seeing include the
Life Electric monument and Villa Erba.
Como is served by a railway service called Servizio
Ferroviario Regionale, which connects the city to various other places in
Lombardy. It covers a total of seven stations - Como San Giovanni and Como Nord Lago being
the main ones. The transport network also includes a number of buses and taxis.
While Como does not have an airport of its own, it’s close to a number of others such as Milan Malpensa, Lugano and Orio al Serio International - all of which can be reached by car.
SilverDoor provides a number of serviced apartments in Como, ideal for a business trip or short break.
