All you need to know about Cairns

Cairns is a picturesque city in Queensland, Australia. Part of the Cairns region, it has a large residential population, and is a popular tourist destination. It lies on the east coast of Cape York, between the Great Dividing Range and Coral Sea, in an area surrounded by natural beauty.

The city has a tropical climate and sees a lot rainfall throughout the year, with temperatures ranging to between 17°C and 40°C.

A major commercial centre, Cairns is home to various government departments, shopping centres and office buildings. Its main shopping complex, Cairns Central, can be found in the city’s central business district - and shares an area with world class restaurants and bars.

Tourism plays a key part in Cairns economy, much as it does in other coastal cities in Australia. Popular activities include snorkelling, scuba and glass bottom boat tours, but Cairns is just as great to explore on foot. Its local attractions range from nature reserves like Daintree Forest to the local landmarks St Monica’s Old Cathedral and the Tanks Arts Centre.

Cairns has an extensive public bus transit network and is also well served by trains. Cairns railway station is the city’s main train hub and operates a regular service to Brisbane and Kuranda.
