Changsha is the capital of Hunan province in central China. The large city has a history dating to the Zhou dynasty. Changsha is associated with Chairman Mao Zedong, who founded the People’s Republic of China. The former leader lived and studied in the city before joining the Communist Party. Changsha is also renowned for its collection of Western Han dynasty tombs, known as the Mawangdui. The city is a major inland port transporting rice, timber, cotton and livestock across China. It has a strong textile manufacturing industry, with agricultural fertilisers also produced in the city.
