All you need to know about Grimsby

Grimsby is a seaport and coastal town in North East Lincolnshire. It sits on the South Bank of Humber Estuary, and adjoins the North Sea. It has a population of over 88,000 and is twinned with the following cities: Tromso (Norway), Bremerhavan (Germany), Banjul (The Gambia), Dieppe (France) and Akureyri (Iceland). The town is largely low in topography and is located near to the main terminus of the A180 road.

Grimsby originally went by the name “Great Grimsby”, and started life as a Roman settlement. In 9th century AD, it was conquered by the Danes, and during the medieval period, the town grew into a trading and fashion port. In the centuries that followed, Grimsby’s population climbed, and, by 1801, hit 1,524.

In 1796, The Grimsby Haven Company was established and served the purpose of improving the town’s port. As a result, Grimsby began to import more and more goods such as timber, iron, hemp, wheat and flax, and, to cope with this demand, new docks were opened.

The arrival of the railway to Grimsby in 1848 helped ease the flow of goods to and from the town. Direct links were opened up to Billingsgate Fish Market, creating a transport network for Grimsby to export its fish to London. With that, the town became a hub for the commercial fishing industry.

During the Second World War, Grimsby’s Royal Park served as the UK’s biggest base for minesweepers to guard the North Sea. In the decades that followed, the town’s fishing industry declined and brought an end to a familiar way of life that had sustained for generations.

Today, Grimsby is the main administrative centre for North East Lincolnshire, specialising in ports, logistics, chemicals and digital media. The town has a shopping area centred on Victoria Street - where you’ll find the shopping centre Freshney Place. Points of interest include the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre, Grimsby Auditorum and the Time Trap Museum. In nearby Cleethropes you’ll find attractions such as Cleethorpes Country Park and Cleethorpes Beach, as well as Cleethorpes Boating Lake.

Serviced apartments are a popular choice for business travellers visiting Grimsby as they provide a relaxing base in the city with a range of home comforts such as kitchen facilities, lounge areas and a work desk.

Grimsby is served by buses and trains. There are two main train stations in the town - Grimsby Town rail station and Grimsby Docks railway station - both of which offer services to Manchester, Sheffield and Barton Upon Humber. The nearest motorway to Grimsby is the M180, located roughly 15 miles away. Grimsby is also connected by the A18 and the A16 roads – which link the town to Louth. Humberside Airport is situated 14 miles from the town as is easily reached by car.
