All you need to know about Lincoln

Lincoln is a county town and cathedral city in Lincolnshire. It lies on the River Witham and is divided into two zones - Uphill and Downhill. Originally a Roman town, it’s grown to become a key tourist centre, home to historic sights and landmarks. It’s located in the East Midlands of England, and has a population of more than 100,000. The city has a maritime climate, characterised by mild winters and cool summers.

Lincoln started life as an Iron Age settlement, before later being conquered by the Romans - who turned the city into a legionary fortress and renamed it Lindum Colonia. In the Viking period, Lincoln was a prominent trading centre known for its export of coins and, by 1068 Lincoln Castle was built, bringing with it a transformation to the topography of the city.

In the years that followed, Lincoln became one of the wealthiest towns in Britain on account of its trade cloth and wool. These days, Lincoln’s economy is centred on a mixture of tourism, arable farming, commerce and public administration. The city also has a developing IT economy. It’s currently home to the University of Lincoln and Lincoln City Football Club.

Popular attractions in Lincoln include Guildhall and Stonebow Lincoln, the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, and the historic walking area, Steep Hill. For great art, head to either the Harding House Gallery or the Sam Scorer Gallery. And, for nature, visit the Lincoln Arboretum. Other sites worth seeing include Lincoln Medieval Bishops Palace, Doddington Hall and Gardens, and St. Katherine’s Heritage and Cultural Centre.

Lincoln can be reached by car or train. The two main roads which run through the city are the A46 and A15, which connect to Bath, Leicester and Peterborough. The city has one main train station - Lincoln Central - which offers services to Sheffield, Nottingham and Grimsby. The closest airport to Lincoln is Humberside International Airport at roughly 32 miles away.
