All you need to know about Hampstead

Hampstead is an affluent village in London, located roughly four miles from Charing Cross. It’s quaint, leafy, and boasts some of London’s most expensive housing. Part of the London Borough of Camden, it’s easily reached by both train and bus.

The name Hampstead derives from Old English, and the village itself dates back as far as AD 986. During the 17th century, the village grew in size and came to be known for its medicinal spas.

Much of the village’s luxury housing was built during the 1870s and 1880s, and, by the early 20th century, many famous Hampstead buildings came into existence, including the Isokon building, Hilifield Court and the Royal Free Hospital.

These days, Hampstead is regarded as an arty, liberal hub. Many travel far and wide to see the famous Hampstead Heath: A large, ancient park overlooking the city. Famous attractions include the Freud Museum, Keats House and Kenwood House. Other popular sites include Hampstead Theatre and the Pentameters Theatre.

Hampstead boasts a major business terminus, with frequent connections across London. It has a total of two tube stations - Hampstead and Belsize Park - which connect to the Northern and Jubilee lines. For overground trains, head to Hampstead Heath railway station.
