per nightSituated in south-west London besides the River Thames,
Richmond is an idyllic area with beautiful outdoor spaces and protected
views of the river. Unlike other areas of London, Richmond features
predominantly low rise buildings and a suburban and leisure focus, with ample
historical architecture throughout its streets. The area is, however, popular
with tech companies and media groups, which invest in the area’s
relaxed pace and high quality of living for staff.
Richmond
station is connected to Kew Gardens, Stratford and Windsor via the
District Line, London Overground and Waterloo to Reading Line. In addition,
multiple London buses serve Richmond, meaning transport to virtually any other
are of the city is easily accomplished. The A316 provides fast movement between
the M3 and Chiswick, and the area is generally less congested than other parts
of London.
Perhaps the most famous of Richmond’s sights, Richmond
Hill has inspired many great artists, including J.M.W. Turner, and remains
a popular attraction for residents and tourists alike. At the top of the hill
lies the entrance to Richmond
Park which, with its natural nature reserve status and population of over
600 red and fallow deer, is a welcome retreat for many looking to escape the
London sprawl. The area also offers entertainment in the form of a cinema
and theatre, not to mention the countless bars and restaurants that can be
found along its streets. Particularly popular are bars and eateries along the
waterfront.
There is plenty to do to keep fit in Richmond, with the Pools on the Park
leisure centre offering indoor and outdoor pools for swimming enthusiasts. Richmond
also has plenty of cycling paths, both on and off road, as well as along the
Thames Towpath. Richmond
Athletic Ground is home to rugby and football events, whereas water sports
are especially popular, with row boat hire and a canoe club dominating the
river.
Richmond is often used as a filming location, with Richmond
Park proving to be especially popular. Scenes for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of
Shadows were filmed in the park, as were scenes from the Disney musical, Into
the Woods. Richmond Theatre has been used as a backdrop to many major films,
such as The Krays, Bedazzled, Bugsy Malone, The Hours and Finding Neverland. The
village green area, with its Georgian architecture, is often used in period
dramas. Several television shows have been filmed in the area, including
Downton Abbey and Agatha Christie’s Poirot.
