All you need to know about Sutton

Sutton is a town in South London, part of the London Borough of Sutton. It’s located roughly 11 miles from Charing Cross and is one of several metropolitan centres making up the London Plan. The town is predominately middle class and has a population of over 40,000. Much like the rest of London, it has a temperate oceanic climate, characterised by cool summers and mild winters. The predominant language spoken is English and the main currency used is the British Pound. As a key metropolitan centre and retail hub, Sutton is home to over 6,000 companies, which makes it popular with business travellers seeking quality serviced apartments.

Sutton originally went by the name ‘Sudtone’, which derives from the Old English words ‘sūth’ and ‘tūn’, meaning ‘south farm’. There is evidence of settlement in the area as early as the Roman period, with the discovery of an ancient Roman Villa and a Roman road called Stane Street. In 1086, the area was home to roughly 200 people and, by 1901, its population had grown to approximately 17,000. This increase has been partly driven by a rise in business travellers, who have come in search of quality accommodation, including serviced apartments.

Today, Sutton is a bustling commercial area boasting great shops, green spaces and schools. It’s home to roughly 80 parks and 150 Listed Buildings and has a leafy, suburban feel. Popular sights include Whitehall Historic House, Cheam Park and Mayfield Lavender Farm – located in nearby Banstead. Its various attractions combine to form both a residential town and a business travel hub.

Sutton is well connected by public transport. Sutton train station offers direct services to the following three central London stations: London Bridge, Blackfriars and London Victoria. The station also connects to destinations outside London including Epsom, Horsham and Leatherhead. The closest airport to Sutton is Gatwick Airport, at roughly 23 miles away. Such transport links mean that Sutton is well connected from a business travel standpoint.
