Jersey City is in the state of New Jersey and is part of the New York metropolitan area. It has such close proximity to the city that it is often referred to as the 6th borough of New York. Jersey City has 11 miles of waterfront and is an important centre of trade and transportation. It has a continually increasing population which now stands at over 254,000.
Within its borders Jersey City has Ellis Island, the immigration centre which had over 12 million people pass through its doors during1880-1954. This has helped to make Jersey City one of the most diverse cities in America.
Many big corporations have their headquarters in Jersey City and the skyline is now dominated by skyscrapers. Goldman Sachs Tower was one of the first and now the most iconic of these, followed by Chase Manhattan Bank, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Charles Schwab, and others continue to bring their businesses to the area.
