Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Nha Trang was a relatively uninhabited area boasting beautiful wildlife. However, in the early 20th century, it began to change rapidly. Its various villages including Huân, Vạn Thạnh and Phước Hải were merged together to form a townlet, and paved the way for yet more transformation in the late 19th century, with the arrival of new businesses and industries on a mission to develop Nha Trang. Under French occupation, Nha Trang was regarded as a de facto capital of Khánh Hòa Province, home to numerous colonial administration offices. In 1937, Nha Trang’s status was updated to a town. At this stage, the town had a total of five wards: Xương Huân, Phương Câu, Vạn Thạnh, Phương Sài, and Phước Hải.

In 1977, Nha Trang was upgraded to a city, under the jurisdiction of Phú Khánh Province, whereby a number of communes were merged together to form a collective new Nha Trang City territory. Today, Nha Trang is an exciting coastal resort city rich in parks, gardens, beaches, nightlife and quality accommodation. Top attractions include Ba Ho Waterfalls, Po Nagar temple, Yang Bay Eco Park, Chua Suoi Do and Long Sơn Pagoda.
