All you need to know about Charleston

Charleston is a city in South Carolina, USA. Part of Charleston County, it overlooks Charleston Harbour and lies south of South Carolina’s coastline. The city has a population of more than 120,000 and a total surface area of 127.5 square miles. Charleston is part of a wider Metropolitan Area which includes the counties Berkeley and Dorchester. The main language spoken in Charleston is English and the predominant currency used is the US Dollar. The city offers a humid subtropical climate, characterised by hot summers and mild winters. As a popular tourist destination with a developed economy, Charleston welcomes business travellers with all manner of serviced apartments and corporate housing.

Charleston was established in 1670 and originally went by the name Charles Town, with reference to King Charles II of England. The area was initially situated on the west bank of the Ashley River, before later being moved to its current site. The transition was pivotal in transforming Charleston into the business travel hub that we have today.

During its history, Charleston has gone from being a planned town to a fully-fledged city with great schools, landmarks and accommodation. It’s survived many conflicts and natural disasters and expanded its borders with the various people who’ve occupied it. In 1783, Charleston was incorporated as a city and prospered as a result. The invention of gin had a big role to play in driving its economy. Its development pushed the sale of one of Charleston’s prized commodities – cotton – and led to it being a major export. This economic activity helped shape Charleston’s image as a centre for business travel and corporate housing.

Today, Charleston is considered one of America’s friendliest cities and boasts a colourful array of sights and attractions. Its economy is centred on a mixture of tourism, shipping and technology, with the city playing host to both shipping terminals and a burgeoning IT sector. Its major attractions include St. Michael’s Church, Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and McLeod Plantation Historic Site. These attractions offer plenty to do in Charleston away from work-related activities associated with business travel.

Charleston is linked by interstates, highways and Amtrak trains. There are two daily Amtrak which run in Charleston: the Silver Meteor and The Palmetto.
