All you need to know about Brentwood

Brentwood is a large suburban town Essex. Part of the London commuter belt, it lies 20 miles north-east of Charing Cross and is part of the borough of Brentwood. The town has a population of over 79,000, and the main currency used is the British pound. The predominant language spoken in Brentwood is English.  Brentwood is twinned with two beautiful European towns: Roth in Germany and Montbazon in France.

The name Brentwood is a play on the words “burnt” and “word”, with reference to the name that Brentwood went by in the 18th century. During the Bronze Age, Brentwood, like most of Essex was a mass of forest and was relatively occupied.  The earliest settlers in Brentwood were thought to be the Saxons.

Later in history, the growth of the wool and cloth industry in Essex encouraged the development of the town.  Nowadays, Brentwood is home to many leading corporations, with head offices operating there including Ford, Marks and Spencers and Canon UK.

Brentwood has many attractions including a number of outdoor open spaces such as Weald Country Park-a 700-year-old, 500-acre park, home to wild deer and Warley Place Nature Reserve described as a “hidden gem in Brentwood”. Other sites worth seeing are Brentwood Karting race track, and Brentwood Cathedral – which takes its inspiration from Italian Renaissance art, and achieved its Cathedral status in 1917.

Brentwood is easily accessible by train, with Brentwood station being half a mile from the centre of town. This line runs to Liverpool Street and is operated by TFL Rail. The M25 runs just south of Brentwood and is a popular entry point for those arriving by car. Brentwood has over 50 local buses which run to various places across the county.
