All you need to know about Guernsey

Guernsey is located in the English Channel, off the coast of Normandy. It is the southernmost island within the British Isles. Although it is not part of the European Union, its defence lies with the United Kingdom and is treated as part of the European Community. It is home to St Peter Port which is a deepwater harbour welcoming visitors and trade to the city. English is generally the main language used by population, while Guernésiais, the Norman language of the island, is spoken fluently by only about 2%.

Guernsey’s economy is based around financial services including banking and insurance. This has led the city to become a leading, international, finance centre with its own currency. Its scenic landscapes offer a popular tourist destination and its mild climate allows for industries such as agriculture and horticulture to thrive. The city is also home to Specsavers Optical Group which is one of the largest optical chains operating in several countries. Guernsey’s economy is committed to furthering business development that will be diverse and sustainable.

Ferries operate to and from Guernsey’s ports and harbours which are located in St Peter Port and St Sampson. There are two main airports, Guernsey Airport and Alderney Airport, in which the States of Guernsey operate their own airline. Passport-free travel to and from the United Kingdom is also possible as Guernsey is part of the Common Travel Area and the British Crown. Public buses provide frequent travel and the Alderney Railway network runs throughout the summer months and seasonal festivals.
