All you need to know about Lodz

Łódź is major city and industrial hub in Poland. It’s located in the centre of the country, 84 miles south-west of Warsaw, and has a population of more than 690,000. It’s divided into 36 separate districts, many of which lie in touching distance of each other.

Starting life as a small settlement in the early 14th century, Łódź was initially an insubstantial town, before later experiencing rapid growth with the rise of its cloth industry. With this came an increase in migrants settling there, which, in turn, has made the city more multicultural.

Presently, Łódź is a prominent logistics centre, home to various fast growing companies and businesses like Infosys. Nicknamed Polish Manchester, its attracting more and more investment as time goes on, to such extent that the city’s unemployment rate is shrinking too.

Must-see attractions include the Karol Poznanski Palace, City of Lodz History Museum, Lodz Cathedral and the Park of Survivors. If shopping is your thing, head to the shopping mall, Manufaktura.

Lodz enjoys a convenient location close to Poland’s east-west and north-south freeways - which connect to Gdansk and the Czech Republic. Its public transport is a mix of buses, trams and trains, and its main airport, Łódź Władysław Reymont, lies four miles from the city centre.
