All you need to know about Edmonton

Edmonton is capital of Canada's Alberta province. It’s situated on the North Saskatchewan River, and lies at the centre of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region. It has a population of more than 1.3 million and is one of Canada’s largest municipalities.

Regarded as a key educational and cultural centre, Edmonton is home to various universities, along with attractions like Fort Edmonton Park, the Windspear Centre and Muttart Conservatory. The city is also famous for its sport, and plays host to a number of top football, hockey and soccer teams. Nightlife can be found in various parts of Edmonton, including 82 Avenue and 103 Street. Edmonton’s main industry is oil and gas. In the 1940s, the city was named the “Oil Capital of Canada”, and, since then has gone on to be at the centre of various energy projects. Edmonton is also known for its technological developments, anchored by research from the University of Alberta. Other important sectors include banking and retail.

Edmonton is a principal transportation gateway in Alberta, served by trains, buses and bicycles. The Edmonton Transit Service, the city’s public transit agency, provides a light rail service, covering more than 15 stations, and sees over 112,000 weekday riders.  Its main airport is Edmonton International.
