All you need to know about Blackpool

Blackpool is a town in North West England. It lies on the Lancashire coast, between the Wyre and Ribble estuaries, and overlooks the Irish Sea. The town is approximately 15 miles from Preston and 27 miles from Bolton. It has a population of over 130,000, and is regarded as the most densely populated town in Lancashire.

In the 18th century, Blackpool was one of the most fashionable places in Britain. Many would flock there in summer to sunbathe on its sandy beach, and, by the 19th century a number of new buildings were erected in the town.

It was during that time that Blackpool’s prominence as a tourist hub grew. The town formed part of a number of industrialised regions in Northern England, and boomed thanks to rail development and an increase in tourist numbers.

These days, Blackpool is popular seaside resort with various landmarks and attractions. Its economy plays host to both small businesses and large employers include National Savings and Investments (NS&I). Top sites include the Blackpool Tower, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, The Grand Theatre and Blackpool Zoo. For shopping, head to the small shopping arcade, North Pier. A number of famous films have been shot in Blackpool including Funny Bones and The Parole Officer.

The town boasts several major events throughout the year including musical festivals and dance competitions. Blackpool Illuminations, for example, has been running since 1979, and brings together a series of exciting lighted displays, whilst the Blackpool Dance Festival packs some serious ballroom action. Regeneration is currently underway in Blackpool, and it’s expected that further transformation will arrive in the years to come.

Blackpool offers a number of transport links. You can travel to the town by bus or coach via the companies Blackpool Transport, Stagcoach and National Express or arrive by train. There are total of eight train stations in Blackpool including Blackpool North and Blackpool South. Blackpool also has its tramway, which runs from Starr Gate to Fleetwood. The main airport is Blackpool International Airport.
