Located in the East Midlands, Oakham is the county lovely market town of Rutland. It is a great place for a short trip and wonderful rural town to relocate or move too. Oakham is very rural as the closest big city is Leicester over 25 miles away. Despite being reasonably small, Oakham is rich in history. Situated in the heart of the countryside Oakham is known for being a place that took in evacuees during World War 2. The town has an amiable atmosphere and is made up on buildings dating back to the 13th Century. A picturesque town, Oakham is home to a variety of great restaurants, cafes, and heritage sites.

 

 

Things to do in Oakham

There are a lot of outdoor sites and activities in and around Oakham. Rutland Water Park covers 4,200 acres of countryside, it is a space where you can cycle and walk around plus have a coffee at Harbour café. There is a reservoir (Rutland Water) in the park where you can hire a boat and even partake in different watersport activities. Normanton Church is a beautiful building on the shoreline of Rutland Water worth a visit. A fine piece of Norman architecture, Oakham Castle is free to visit. An 8-minute drive away is Aqua Park Rutland which opens in May and is a great fun if visiting with family. When in Oakham we recommend visiting independent shops and checking out local exhibitions, such as Trent Galleries.

 

 

Transport in Oakham

There are six main bus services passing through Oakham seven days a week. There is multiple bus stops that located on the B640 which runs through the centre of the town. Oakham train station has regular trains stopping at major stations such as Birmingham New Street, Cambridge, and Stansted Airport. There are numerous taxi services in Oakham plus you can easily explore the town by cycling or walking.
