Tips for staying in Indiana

Things to do in Indiana:

Indianapolis, the state capital, has plenty to explore during your next business trip to Indiana. The city is home to the world’s largest auto racetrack – Indianapolis Motor Speedway – and its on-site museum has historic race cars and memorabilia to explore. The Indianapolis Zoo is also worth visiting – it’s the only zoo in the Midwest which offers an in-water experience with dolphins!

The second-largest city in Indiana – Fort Wayne – has lots to explore as well; the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and Embassy Theatre are perfect for experiencing local culture and entertainment. A vibrant shopping scene in the city means that malls such as Jefferson Pointe Shopping Centre and Glenbrook Square are also popular with visitors.

Transport in Indiana:

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) oversees the multiple methods of transportation available in the state. These include:

Air – Indianapolis International Airport is the major airport in the state. Other airports include Fort Wayne International, South Bend International Airport and Evansville Regional Airport.

Rail – A number of Amtrak services run through the state regularly. The Cardinal service runs through Dyer, Rensselaer, Lafayette, Crawfordsville, Indianapolis, and Connersville. The Capital Limited line runs through South Bend and Elkhart, the Wolverine line runs through Hammond and Michigan City, and the Lake Shore Limited line runs through South Bend, Elkhart, and Waterloo.

Road – A foreign driving licence is valid for the first year of your stay in the state. Alternatively – if you wish to use private-hire transportation – Uber, Lyft, and traditional taxi services are all easily available.

Things to know before visiting Indiana:

Motor Sports – The state is known for its motorsports competitions. The Indianapolis 500 is held every year and takes place at the Indianapolis 500 Motor Speedway. The track is the largest sporting facility in the world and can hold 400,000 people on its busiest race days.

The Polar Plunge – For the past 24 years, locals have taken part in the annual fundraiser ‘Polar Plunge’. Raising money to support Special Olympics Indiana, participants take on a number of fun activities (in ice-cold water!) including costume contests and 5K races.

Indiana Arts and Culture Passport – Renowned for its cultural attractions, the Arts and Culture Passport encourages people to make the most of their visit. With over 200 participating locations, users can win prizes for the number of locations they visit (15 check-ins earns a sketchbook, 100 check-ins earns a custom art piece!).
