Serviced Apartments in New York - 7 Things you Need to Know
19th September 2023

Famous for world-class restaurants, museums, art galleries, shops and entertainment, New York is ever reinventing itself, making it a place you must visit more than once. The city offers a treasure trove of neighbourhoods and cultures, each with its own historic identity and distinct character. If you’re heading to New York on business soon or relocating to the Big Apple, here are 9 things you need to know.

Getting to New York City

New York has three major airports – LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy International and Newark Liberty International.

Newark Liberty International accommodates more than 30 airlines and is easy to access if your serviced apartment is on the west side of Manhattan. With airport shuttles available from midtown Manhattan, Newark Liberty International is great for those looking for a stress-free journey to and from the airport.

LaGuardia Airport is popular for domestic flights including airlines like Delta, JetBlue and American Airlines. After a recent multi-billion dollar redevelopment, this airport now offers impressive modern terminals, and is just a 30-minute cab journey from Brooklyn, or Manhattan.

John F. Kennedy International Airport accommodates more than 70 airlines, including many international carriers. As one of the country’s busiest airports, JFK has more than 130 gates and its name alone makes it a renowned part of New York’s identity. If you’re staying in Brooklyn or Queens, JFK is your closest airport.

Navigating NYC

Navigating your way around New York can seem intimidating for first timers in this bustling city, however it’s simple once you know how. The layout of Manhattan is a grid pattern, with streets running east to west and avenues running north to south. If you are hailing a cab from outside your serviced apartment or asking for directions, say the street first and avenue second – this is the way the local New Yorkers do it.

The subway has 24 lines and is the cheapest and most efficient way of getting around the city. The MTA bus system is also a great option with 253 local routes around the city. This is a well-connected city so you can almost guarantee that a subway or bus stop is a 5-10-minute walk from your serviced apartment in New York.

The famous yellow cabs in New York City have become emblematic of the area and hailing one is quintessentially NYC. Remember to check which part of the panel is lit up to know if the cab is available before hailing one from your corporate apartment in New York to your next business meeting.

Weather

New York City experiences drastic changes in weather throughout the year, with heavy snow in the winter and hot, humid summers. Heavy snow usually falls between December and March, while rain tends to fall between the months of April and June. It might be wise to keep an umbrella handy in your serviced apartment and invest in a good winter coat for the colder months. Weather from August to September is warm, clear and relatively dry – if you’re relocating to NYC, a varied wardrobe equipped for all temperatures is key.

New York City Boroughs

New York City is divided into five key areas: Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn. When visiting the concrete jungle, there’s more to see more than just central Manhattan, so make sure to set aside some down time to explore this vibrant city.

Home to Time Square, the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty, you can do all that and more in Manhattan! At SilverDoor we offer the very best of serviced apartments in New York and have a variety available in Manhattan.

Home to the New York Yankees, the Bronx is known for its hip hop origins, green spaces, historical structures, and culture. Situated in the heart of the Bronx is the New York Botanical Garden which offers beautiful walks and greenhouses filled with exotic shrubbery.

Staten Island is known for its iconic beaches and a slower pace of life compared to its neighbouring boroughs. The 19th century buildings and seaside views add character to this area, as well as its historical sites like the National Lighthouse Museum, which can be accessed by the Staten Island Ferry and makes for a great day trip in the summer months!

Queens is the largest borough in New York, located on Long Island. With several bridges, Queens is closely connected to Manhattan and the Bronx, and is considered one of the best areas to live in New York due to its diverse population and comparatively lower cost of living.

Brooklyn offers a more relaxed vibe than Manhattan. Not only an ideal location to settle with your family, but Brooklyn is also considered the trendiest borough, filled with vibrant art, culture, entertainment and food. What’s different about US and UK serviced apartments?

If you haven’t stayed in New York serviced apartment before, there are some differences between UK and US accommodation to be aware of. Firstly, you might hear serviced apartments in the US more commonly referred to as ‘corporate housing’ or ‘furnished accommodation’. Rates are also typically charged daily in America opposed to the nightly rates you may be used to.

Also, it’s good to know that the minimum stay terms for apartments can vary. In the UK, minimum stay terms tend to be shorter at 1 day, whereas most corporate apartments in the US require a minimum stay of 30 days. We will always try and secure the best booking terms for your stay, so be sure to specify your length of stay at enquiry.

In the UK, housekeeping service is typically once a week, while in the US most housekeeping is offered every two weeks. This will also vary depending on property provider but it is something to keep in mind if you are booking an extended stay.
